Evgeny Shirokov

Evgeny Shirokov is above all a painter. An artist for whom landscape is not an external motif but a means of attentive and focused conversation with the world. His work holds no desire for effect, no accidental beauty, no gesture for its own sake. His painting is built on precise observation, inner discipline, and a rare ability to see in nature not a subject, but a state.

Shirokov works within the tradition of the realist school, yet his realism is neither dry nor descriptive. He does not copy what he sees but translates it into painterly experience, where light, air, the silence of space and the subtle relationships of colour hold particular importance. This is why his landscapes are perceived not as depictions of a place, but as a whole mood — a slow and deep presence within nature.

Biography

Evgeny Nikolaevich Shirokov was born on 3 September 1953 in the Tajik SSR. His childhood and youth were spent in Central Asia — in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — where his perception of nature, light and space took shape. In the 1990s the artist and his family moved to Krasnodar Krai in southern Russia, and since then he has painted primarily the landscapes of the Northern Caucasus: the mountains, rivers, fields and skies of the foothills, in which he finds the quiet, focused presence that became the foundation of his work.
